Police made a grim discovery while investigating a jewelry heist after arresting a suspect last month. In a bizarre incident, officers took 32-year-old Jaythan Lawrence Gilder into custody for what they believe was a brazen attempt at a $100,000 heist. The suspect is accused of impersonating a representative of an NBA player to gain access to high-end jewelry at a Tiffany & Co. store in Orlando.According to police, Gilder allegedly grabbed whatever he could and sprinted for the exit.Orlando police reported that Gilder forced his way out of the store with earrings totaling $769,500—one pair of 4.86-carat diamond earrings worth $160,000 and another pair of 8.19-carat diamond earrings valued at $609,500.He was also accused of stealing a ring worth $587,000, which was later recovered. The moment Gilder allegedly bolted was caught on CCTV, and police noted that a staff member was injured while attempting to stop him from fleeing.Gilder was later stopped on Interstate 10 in Washington County, where he was arrested on charges of resisting arrest, along with 48 outstanding warrants from Colorado. Authorities believe he was attempting to drive to Texas after the theft. But the strangest twist? Police couldn’t immediately locate all of the stolen jewelry. It turns out Gilder is accused of swallowing some of it.
An X-ray of the jewlery found inside Gilder
An X-ray later released by police and taken at the jail revealed at least 13 carats of diamonds allegedly inside Gilder’s stomach, valued at just under $800,000.The arrest report stated: “These foreign objects are suspected to be the Tiffany & Co. earrings stolen in the robbery but will need to be collected by WCSO after they pass through Gilder’s system before confirmation.”I certainly don’t envy the person assigned to that task…
He was charged with first-degree grand theft and robbery with a mask
While in police custody, Gilder reportedly asked jail staff if he would be charged for the items found in his stomach.A staff member later claimed they heard the suspect remark that he should have simply thrown them out the window. He has been charged with first-degree grand theft and robbery with a mask.
